Eight Way hand Tied

An 8-way hand-tied system is a high-quality method of constructing the support foundation for upholstered furniture, particularly sofas and larger chairs. It involves tying the springs together in eight different directions—front to back, side to side, and diagonally—using strong twine. This method ensures that the springs are evenly distributed and securely positioned, providing superior comfort, durability, and support compared to other spring systems. It's often found in high-end, custom-made furniture.

The 8-way hand-tied system is a meticulous and labor-intensive method used in crafting high-quality upholstered furniture. Here's how it's done:

  1. Frame Construction:
The process begins with a solid hardwood frame, which serves as the foundation. The wood used to make the frame is typically kiln-dried to prevent warping and increase longevity.
  2. Webbing:
Jute/poly webbing is stretched and secured across the bottom of the frame to provide a stable base. This webbing acts as the first layer of support for the springs.
  3. Spring Placement:
Heavy-gauge coil springs are placed on top of the webbing. The springs are usually hourglass-shaped and vary in height depending on the desired level of firmness. The springs are attached to the frame using metal clips or nails.
  4. Tying the Springs:
Each spring is tied to the adjacent springs in eight different directions: front to back, side to side, and diagonally (northwest to southeast and northeast to southwest). This tying is done using high-quality twine, usually made of flax, which is strong and durable.
The twine is pulled tightly, ensuring that each spring is uniformly tensioned. The knots used are typically double knots to prevent slippage.
  5. Padding and Insulation:
Once the springs are tied, a layer of burlap/thick poly fabric is placed over them. This layer acts as a protective layer and helps keep the springs in place.
Next, a layer of  padding material is added to create a smooth surface and additional comfort.
Finally, a layer of muslin is applied to hold everything in place and create a foundation for the upholstery.
  6. Upholstery:
The final step is applying the upholstery fabric over the prepared surface. The fabric is stretched and secured tightly to the frame, ensuring a snug fit.
The edges are finished with welting or trim to create a clean and polished look.

Benefits:

  • Even Support: The 8-way hand-tied method ensures that each spring moves independently but is evenly supported by its neighboring springs. This provides superior comfort and reduces the likelihood of sagging over time.
  • Durability: This method is known for its longevity. High-quality furniture made with an 8-way hand-tied system can last for decades.
  • Comfort: The even distribution of tension and support makes furniture with this system extremely comfortable, adapting to the body's contours.
