Foam is often covered in Dacron (a polyester fiber) for upholstery because it provides several functional and aesthetic benefits:
Smooths Edges: Foam alone can have sharp or rigid edges, but Dacron softens and rounds out the shape of the foam, giving upholstered pieces a smoother, more appealing appearance.
Improved Cushioning: Dacron adds an extra layer of softness to the foam, making furniture more comfortable without significantly altering the support provided by the foam.
Durability: The layer of Dacron helps protect the foam from wear and tear, extending the life of the cushion by acting as a buffer between the foam and the upholstery fabric.
Prevents Fabric Wear: Since Dacron reduces the friction between the foam and the outer fabric, it helps prevent fabric from rubbing directly against the foam, which can cause the fabric to wear out faster.
Better Fit and Appearance: Upholstery fabric can look wrinkled or loose when applied directly over foam. The Dacron layer helps fill out the fabric, creating a tighter, more tailored look.
These reasons make Dacron a popular choice for enhancing both the longevity and comfort of upholstered furniture. Dacron for cushions is typically used on all sides except the side or area where there are zippers (so that they do not snag). Dacron is normally used in our new upholstery and re-upholstery process.
